The Society of the War of 1812 in the District of Columbia was founded on February 18, 1894 to perpetuate the memories of our Second War of Independence, and the true beginnings of American Manifest Destiny. The members of the Society are gentlemen directly descended from the “Warhawks” who fought in the War of 1812, or were elected members of the many state governments, or the federal government.
We are an independent society associated with the General Society of the War of 1812, and the many State Societies of the War of 1812.
We keep alive the memory of the War of 1812 in the District of Columbia by conducting civic ceremonies at key historic sites in the District, presenting ROTC awards, and hosting an annual reception and historical lecture each February.
In addition, we have partnered with Ancestry.com and Fold3.com to forever record the history of our member’s ancestors. The membership applications of the Society, from 1894 to 1974 have been digitized are posted on Fold3.com. See their link in our link’s section.
